Pledge ingathering and St. Andrew’s Day celebration

On Sunday, November 8, we will have our ingathering of pledges for 2027. Pledge cards will be blessed at both services, so be sure to bring or mail your card in advance so it will be here. You can also fill out an online pledge card on our website, standrews-episcopal.org.  On Nov. 8 we will celebrate the Feast of St. Andrew, our parish’s patron saint. The 10:30 AM service will be preceded by a bagpipe procession, and after the service, we'll have a festive coffee hour. There will be some select Scottish goodies, and we hope you will please bring other sweet treats or small nibbles to share with the church. In honor of St. Andrew’s Day, please wear plaid (tartans are great if you have one!); or red, the color of martyrdom. 

Turkey and Cranberry time!

Halloween is almost here and right behind it is Thanksgiving. Once again in support of our partner school, Sedgefield Elementary we are conducting a turkey and cranberry drive. Our goal this year is 50 whole turkeys and 50 cans of cranberry sauce. We are looking for Frozen turkeys (10-15 lbs.) which typically feed a family of five. The school needs all items no later than November 16. Please consider purchasing a turkey, or a can of cranberry sauce or both. Collection begins immediately. Final Drop off date at the church is November 13. There’ll be a box in the lobby designated for the cranberry sauce. Turkeys will be stored in the freezer. Questions may be referred to Diana Skelton or Teresa Duncan. Your support is greatly appreciated. 

KAIROS cookies and donations needed! The Kairos Prison Ministry team is preparing for its weekend in Lawrenceville Correctional Center Dec. 2-6. Costs for food and lodging for the volunteers who lead the weekend in the prison have risen quite a bit. Your donation can help defray these costs and make it possible for volunteers to do this important work. Please make checks payable to St. Andrew's with KAIROS on the memo line. Donations can be dropped off in the church office or in the offering plate on Sunday morning. Thank you! In addition to donations, we need 100 dozen cookies for the residents of Lawrenceville. Cookies cannot have fruit or nuts and should be packed in Ziploc bags, 12 cookies to a bag. Cookies can be frozen, so feel free to get baking and bring your cookies to the church’s freezer! Cookies should be brought to church no later than Monday, Nov. 30.  If you would like to use the church’s kitchen to bake your cookies, just contact Ann Turner in the church office to schedule a day/time. 

Parish Retreat: Save the Date!

We have the dates for our annual retreat to Chanco: Sept 24-26, 2027. Mark your calendars now for a beautiful weekend of fun, faith, and fellowship. Chanco on the James is the retreat center for the Diocese of Southern Virginia, set along the beautiful James River about an hour from Newport News. We've been building this faith- and relationship-building getaway for three years (!) and we're excited to bring more of the church family into the experience. Contact any member of the planning committee if you have questions, otherwise look for signup and scholarship info to come in May.

Prayer & Share

2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 3:30 PM

The Prayer & Share group meets for study and prayer in the parish library every other Wednesday at 3:30 PM. Newcomers, please contact the church office before attending your first session. We are currently using Henri Nouwen's book Here and Now as our discussion guide. A reminder that this is not a book club or Bible study, and there is no homework. This book's chapters are short and we will read them together when we're gathered. 

Centering Prayer

Wednesdays at 5:00 PM and Thursdays at 7:30 AM

Centering prayer meets Wednesday evenings from 5:00 to 5:30 PM and on Thursday mornings from 7:30 to 8:00 AM. All are welcome, whether you are experienced with centering prayer or a newcomer to the practice. Mets in the parish library. 

Thursday Morning Bible Study

Thursdays at 10:00 AM

The Thursday Morning Bible Study meets Sept. through May at 10:00 AM in the parish library. All are welcome and invited to join us each week as we discuss the lectionary readings for the coming Sunday.

Thursday Night Bible Study

Thursdays beginning Sept. 10, 7:00 PM

We started the Thursday night Bible study with a book from the Old Testament (Esther), then we looked at the mission of the disciples up through Saul's antics in Acts, then, following Saul's conversion in Acts 9, spent time with Paul's letters to the churches in Thessalonica and Galatia.  Beginning on Thursday, September 10, at 7:00 PM in the church library, we will now move into the earliest Gospel revealing the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the Gospel of Mark.  

Hilton Hustle 5K: Support Hilton Elementary School!

Hilton Elementary School has its annual 5K fundraiser, the Hilton Hustle, on Nov 7 this year. They are especially in need of volunteers on race day as well as participants in the 1-mile or 5K races. The course starts right in front of St. Andrew's and winds through Hilton Village and back. It's a great community-building event and way to support public schools. St. Andrew Day Celebration

Parish Breakfast

Mark your calendar and plan to join us for a special Thanksgiving parish breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 15 from 9:00 to 10:15 AM in the parish hall. It's going to be a GREAT time, but we need volunteers to make it happen! Contact the church office to volunteer.

Fire pit fellowship

What better way to spend a crisp fall evening than gathered around a crackling fire with s’mores and hot cider? Please join us on Sunday, Oct. 25, beginning at 4:00 PM. Come and enjoy time with friends and Hilton neighbors too.

Advent Wreath Workshop

Nov. 22, 12 PM

Join us after the 10:30 service Sunday, Nov., 22, in the parish hall where each household will make an Advent wreath to take home. This activity will be suitable for all ages, and you are encouraged to participate whether or not there are small children in your home. Having an Advent wreath helps guide home prayer and adds to the joyful anticipation of Christmas. While all the materials for the wreaths will be provided, we are accepting donations to offset costs. If you have evergreens in your yard—fir, cedar, holly, etc—and can donate clippings, or a pair of labeled clippers to lend, please bring them to church.

Annual Meeting & Vestry Elections

December 6, 9:15 AM

Plan to join us between services on Sunday, December 6 for our annual vestry election.  Members 16 and over may vote in the election; and all of us have a stake in the outcome and in the other business that we will be conducting together.  We will hear updates on our pledge campaign and 2027 budget as well as the work of the Facilities Visioning Team.  And as always, there will be time for your questions and comments. The minutes of last year's Annual Meeting will be sent in the Net newsletter. Please review them prior to Dec. 6 as they must be approved at the Annual Meeting. You can request a copy from the church office.  

Virginia Handbell Consort Holiday Concert
