    PORT volunteers needed

St. Andrew's will partner with Warwick Memorial Methodist Church from the evening of Monday, March 23 through the morning of Tuesday, March 24, for our final PORT commitment of the season. The PORT program offers meals and overnight accommodation at host churches for individuals experiencing homelessness in our community. Our volunteers will assist with serving meals and hosting overnight guests at 38 Hoopes Rd., Newport News. Responsibilities include welcoming guests, assisting with the storage of personal items, supporting the clothing closet, and, in the morning, providing bagged breakfasts and returning belongings. Due to the anticipated number of participants, the Cook Team requests help from the parish in preparing some of the casseroles needed. We will supply the recipe, a casserole baking pan, and reimbursements, as necessary. Both the recipe and baking pans are available for pick-up in the lobby, beginning March 1.  The St. Andrew’s Cook Team will handle the preparation of the remaining casseroles. If you are interested in volunteering for any team, please sign up on the sheet located in the Main Street Lobby.

Donate Easter lilies in memory/honor of someone dear to you

On Easter Sunday, we decorate our altar and church with beautiful lilies given in memory or honor of loved ones. Those honored are listed in the Easter service bulletin. If you would like to donate in honor/memory of someone, forms can be found in the rack outside the parish office. Donations are due by Monday, March 23. Make your check payable to St. Andrew’s with “Easter lily” on the memo line.

KAIROS prison ministry needs your help!

The Kairos Prison Ministry team for Nottoway Correctional Center is preparing for its weekend in Lawrenceville Correctional Center April 23-26 and needs Agape.  Expressions of Agape come to the weekend participants in the form of prayer chains, posters, placemats and cookies. Prayers for the weekend participants and Lawrenceville’s residents, officers and administration:  Signup sheets for prayer partners will be in the lobby.  During the weekend, each prayer will be represented by a link in a prayer chain to show the residents that they are not alone. Cookies: Each Kairos team member needs to bring 100 dozen cookies for the residents of Lawrencville.  They cannot have any coatings such as sugar or icing, or contain any type of fruits or nuts.  Cookies should be dropped off at church no later than Monday, April 20. They can be baked in advance and frozen, but please don’t freeze them before they completely cool or they will be prone to crumbling. Posters and placemats with messages and drawings from youth remind the participants of God’s love:  For posters, please use half-size poster board.  Any children who draw posters or placemats can include their age, but should only sign their first names, do not sign with last names.

You are invited:  Dessert & Discussion; or Pastry & Plenary?

We want to hear from you!  The next step in the Facilities Visioning Team’s ongoing work is to hear directly from our parishioners about your hopes and dreams for St. Andrew’s and our facilities.  Please mark your calendars now and plan to participate in one of two identical focus group sessions:  Dessert & Discussion on Tuesday, April 21 from 7 to 8:30 PM; or Pastry & Plenary on Tuesday, April 28 from 10 to 11:30 AM.  Each session will begin with a short tour of spaces previously used by the school, and then we’ll gather in the Parish Hall to discuss questions such as: How long have you lived in, or been engaged with Hilton Village and/or greater Hilton, including churches? What are your hopes and dreams for St. Andrew’s role in the community? How could St. Andrew’s serve those hopes and dreams? Whether you are a longtime member of St. Andrew’s or new to our congregation, your voice matters.  We need to hear from you.  So that we can ensure there is enough food, please RSVP to the church office by April 19.  Childcare can be provided; let us know by April 14 if you need childcare for either session.  We look forward to seeing you and, more importantly, hearing from you!

Everything You Didn’t Know You Knew About the Christian Faith

Wednesdays, Feb. 25 through Mar. 25. Dinner at 5:30, Program at 6:00 PM

Who is God...the Son...the Holy Spirit?

    Who are we by nature?

    What are the sacraments...the Creeds...the covenant(s)?

    What is prayer... sin...the scriptures?

What is the Church...ministry...the ministers of the Church?

    What is our Christian hope?

Such questions are steeped in our faith-consciousness, things we sort of know - usually more than we think we do - but don't always quite know how to articulate. Thus the theme of this year's Wednesday night Lenten study: Everything You Didn't Know You Knew About the Christian Faith. These questions and more that form the foundation of our Christian faith and enumerated in the Prayer Book's Catechism will be the basis of our annual Lenten Wednesday night supper and program beginning on February 25 at 5:30 PM. Join us during Lent for a soup and salad dinner (by JoAnne's Catering, Cost is $10), and explore together a deeper dive into Everything You Didn't Know You Knew About the Christian Faith.

Screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion. Film runs 1h 47m. Bring a bag lunch.  This film is recommended for ages 16+ only.  Click here to get your free ticket (you don't have to present the ticket to enter the screening).

Thursday Night Bible Study: Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul

    April 9, 7:00 PM

We started the Thursday night Bible study with a book from the Old Testament, then we looked at the mission of the disciples up through Saul's antics in Acts, all of whom had only the Hebrew scriptures at the time.  Beginning on April 9 at 7:00 pm in the library, we will pick up where we left off, setting the stage with Saul's conversion (to become Paul) in Acts 9, followed with a study based in Richard B. Hays' book Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul (the earliest writings in the New Testament), offering new insights into his message to the church of his day and ours.

Sunday Forum: Abraham - A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths

    April 19, May 3, 10, 17 at 9:15 AM

In a time when the world is asking “Can the religions get along?”  One man - Abraham - stands out as the shared ancestor of Jews, Muslims, and Christians, holding the key to our deepest fears - and our possible reconciliation.  Beginning on April 19, the adult forum will resume with a series based on Bruce Feiler's Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths, the story of Feiler's personal quest to better understand our common patriarch who defines faith for half the world.  Both immediate and timeless, Abraham is a powerful universal story, the first-ever interfaith portrait of the man God chose to be God's partner.  Thoughtful and inspiring, it offers a rare vision of hope that will redefine what we think about our neighbors, our future, and ourselves.
