Youth Holy Hikes

Youth Holy HikesPerhaps you have heard of our new initiative at St Andrew's? Youth HOLY HIKES on the second Saturday of the month! We enjoyed this fellowship for the first time last month, and hope more will join us this weekend.

  • WHO is invited: 8th-12th graders, but we welcome the recently graduated too! Friends are always included.
  • WHERE: We meet in the parking lot beside the former PFAC adjacent to the Mariner's Museum.
  • WHEN: Saturday, June 12, at 11 am.
  • WHAT happens?: We walk and talk, munch on homemade cookies, and toss the disc. We hang out for about 1.5- 2 hrs.

What we would really love is to have your child's cell number, so that we might text and invite them ourselves. We have those contacts for only a handful. As parents of young folks, ourselves, we think it's important that you ask their permission to do this. So, if we don't hear back from you, we totally get it!

Please call or email with questions: Marc Vance, 812-764-0355; or Karen & Dan Waddill, 757-604-3238.

Serve the City art

Unite the Youth day of service

Hello St. Andrew's Youth!
I am a decades-long advocate of the idea that the youth are not just the future of the Church, they are the Church now, today. While the world the Church operates in is very different even from when I was in "youth group" (in the '70s) and old models of youth work are becoming obsolete, these rapidly changing cultural dynamics are providing new opportunities to engage our faithful and spirited youth.
One of the ways I am hoping to do that is to gather youth (middle and high schoolers, including this year's grads) from each of the Episcopal Churches in the Newport News and Hampton areas, as well as in Hilton Village, to come together for a community service event sponsored through Serve the City on Tuesday, July 13. Though most of our churches don't have many youth, if each church can interest even a couple of kids and we all come together, we can have a pretty good group to do some important work in and for our community - and it may lead to greater interaction among our youth after the event.
If you think this is a good idea and would work for your schedule, I would be very appreciative if you could get back to me by Friday, June 18 so I will know how to register us properly with Serve the City. If you need further information or would like to talk more about this opportunity, please call me at 812-764-0355. Thanks so much and I look forward to seeing you soon!
Peace and blessings,
The Rev. Marc Vance
Associate Rector
