The obedience of Jesus to the Father sustains him in his confrontation with the powers of darkness as he stands before Pilate, the Governor. Jesus was afterward whipped and scourged. The prophet Joel heralds the pouring out of God's Spirit and the gathering of all nations. Of the faithful Bartholomew it is said he was flayed alive -- hence the knife.
